Most celebrants pack sensible shoes for a wedding - I pack my ski boots.

If you've ever dreamed of getting married surrounded by snow-covered gums, fresh mountain air and spectacular alpine views, you've probably wondered one thing.

"Can we actually get married up there?" Absolutely.

Even better, your celebrant can arrive on skis.

As someone who genuinely loves skiing, I've discovered that combining two of my favourite things is pretty hard to beat. One moment I'm carving turns down the mountain, the next I'm standing in the snow announcing that you are married!

It's not your average wedding ceremony.

Weddings on the Slopes

Falls Creek is one of Victoria's most spectacular places to say "I do."

Whether you've skied your whole life or simply love the romance of winter, there's something magical about exchanging vows while snowflakes drift around you and your guests are wrapped in scarves instead of sunscreen.

The chairlift becomes your wedding transport. The mountains become your backdrop.

Your wedding photos look like they've come straight out of Europe.

And yes, I can legally marry you in less time than it takes to ride the chairlift to the top of Falls Creek.

It's one of my favourite facts because it's completely true.

Snow weddings work a little differently. Timing matters. Weather changes quickly.

Sometimes everyone arrives in snow boots. Sometimes we ski to the ceremony location.

Sometimes we're laughing because someone has taken an unexpected tumble in the powder before the ceremony even begins.

I understand the mountain because I'm there enjoying it too. I love skiing with my family so it's great to mix two of my favourite passions, marrying couples and spending time in the snow.

There's no worried look when someone suggests putting skis back on after the ceremony for photos.

Every season has its own beauty. Winter simply adds a little extra sparkle.

The Ceremony Doesn't Need to Be Complicated

One of the things couples often assume is that a mountain wedding has to be a huge production.

It doesn't. Some of my favourite ceremonies have been beautifully simple.

A couple. Two witnesses. A handful of family.

Snow underfoot. A warm jacket. A great story.

That's all you really need.

Looking After Your Skin

Wedding planning can be exciting. It can also be stressful.

Late nights, endless decision-making and busy schedules often show up on our skin before anything else.

What Happens Once You're Officially Married?

One of the questions I'm often asked is: "Will you stay for a drink after the ceremony?"

The answer is - sometimes. After the legal paperwork is signed and I've officially pronounced you married, my role as your celebrant is complete.

For many weddings, that's my cue to quietly slip away while your guests gather for hugs, congratulations and those all-important family photos.

It's a natural time to leave because you're about to spend the next few hours celebrating with the people who matter most.

Every Wedding Is Different

Every now and then, a couple will invite me to stay for a celebratory drink.

It's always a lovely gesture and one I'm genuinely grateful for.

If time allows, I'll happily raise a glass with you before quietly heading off and leaving you to enjoy the rest of your day.

After all, this celebration belongs to you, your family and your friends.

One Wedding Was a Little Different

One of my favourite photos was taken after my nephew's wedding.

Yes, I was the celebrant. But I was also family. For once, I wasn't racing off to the next job or packing away my ceremony folder.

Instead, I was able to put my feet up, enjoy a cheeky glass of bubbles with my sister-in-law and soak up that wonderful atmosphere that only exists in the moments after a wedding ceremony.

One of my favourites was a bride who arrived at her ceremony on her much-loved mare.

Having grown up around horses, it wasn't a novelty or a staged photo opportunity. It simply felt like her.

Horse and rider moved together with the quiet confidence that only comes from years of trust. There were no nerves, no hesitation and no drama. Just a beautiful partnership arriving at one of life's biggest moments.

When she reached the ceremony, she gracefully dismounted (which is no small feat in a wedding dress!), handed over the reins, and took her father's arm to walk the rest of the way down the aisle.

It was effortless. It was personal. And it couldn't have suited her more.

Why the Best Wedding Memories Are Often the Ones You Never Planned

Every couple hopes their wedding day goes exactly to plan.

The sun is shining. The timing is perfect. Every flower is in place. Every guest arrives on time.

But after more than a decade as a Marriage Celebrant, I can tell you something that surprises almost every couple.

The weddings people talk about for years afterwards are rarely the perfect ones.

They're the ones where something unexpected happened.

One wedding in Gippsland has stayed with me ever since.

It was the beginning of December, and instead of blue skies, we had rain. Lots of it.

Thankfully the venue had a fantastic backup plan. A marquee was quickly set up, guests stayed dry, and everything was ready to go.

The music started.

The first bridesmaid confidently stepped onto the aisle...

...and immediately discovered that wet grass on a gentle slope is surprisingly slippery.

Down she went.

Thankfully, nothing was hurt except her pride.

For a split second everyone froze.

Then she laughed.

The bridal party laughed.

The guests laughed.

And within moments she was back on her feet, brushing herself off and continuing down the aisle as though nothing had happened.

Even better, the bride was still hidden away, completely unaware of the comedy unfolding just metres ahead.

One of the bride's uncles happened to capture everyone's reactions at exactly the right moment, and they're still some of my favourite wedding photographs.

Not because someone fell.

But because every smile was completely genuine.

Your Wedding Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

It's easy to spend months worrying about every tiny detail.

Will it rain?

Will someone forget the rings?

Will a flower girl refuse to walk?

Will the wind ruin everyone's hair?

Here's the truth.

Almost every wedding has a little unexpected moment.

The couples who enjoy their day the most are the ones who embrace it rather than fight it.

Your guests won't remember whether everything was flawless.

They'll remember the laughter.

The emotion.

The way everyone came together.

Those are the moments that become family stories.

A Celebrant's Job Goes Beyond the Ceremony

One of my favourite parts of being a Marriage Celebrant is helping couples stay calm when things don't quite go to plan.

Sometimes that means changing the ceremony location because of the weather.

Sometimes it means reassuring nervous couples that everything is still going beautifully.

And sometimes it simply means sharing a laugh and reminding everyone that this is exactly what makes your wedding uniquely yours.

Because years from now, I can almost guarantee you won't remember every detail.

But you'll definitely remember the moments that nobody could have planned.

Buttonhole Etiquette: Who Wears One and Which Side Does It Go On?

A Marriage Celebrant's Guide to Wedding Buttonholes (Without the Last-Minute Panic)

One of the things couples often don't realise is that your Marriage Celebrant does far more than simply officiate your ceremony.

Long before your guests arrive, I'm helping calm nerves, checking that everyone is where they need to be... and quite often, I'm pinning on buttonholes.

It's surprisingly common for the florist to deliver a beautiful box of buttonholes to the venue, only for everyone to become so busy getting ready that nobody remembers they still need to be attached.

So who ends up helping? Usually me.

Which Side Does a Buttonhole Go On?

This is probably the question I get asked most often. A buttonhole, or boutonniere, is traditionally worn on the left lapel , over your heart, with the flower facing upwards and the stem pointing towards the ground.

Most modern suit jackets have a buttonhole stitched into the left lapel specifically for this purpose, although many people still choose to secure the flower with pins to keep it sitting perfectly.

How Do You Pin a Buttonhole?

Every florist has their own preferred method.

Some thoughtfully attach a small safety pin before delivery, making the process quick and simple.

Others provide florist pins, which create a much neater finish.

If the pins have decorative pearl heads, they can be placed from the front as part of the arrangement. If they're plain florist pins, I usually secure them from behind the lapel so they're hidden from view.

The goal is simple—the flower should look effortless and stay firmly in place for the entire ceremony.

Who Should Wear a Buttonhole?

Traditionally, buttonholes are worn by:

The groom
Groomsmen
Fathers of the couple
Grandfathers
Anyone else the couple wishes to recognise, such as brothers, step-parents or special family members

There are no hard rules. Like every part of your wedding, you can make it your own.

One of My Favourite Wedding Moments

Whenever Mum or Dad is nearby while everyone's getting ready, I'll often encourage them to pin the groom's buttonhole themselves.

It's a tiny moment that usually isn't planned, but it often becomes one of the most meaningful.

The proud smile. The nervous laugh. The final "You look amazing."

Sometimes the simplest weddings become the most meaningful of all.

Getting married doesn't have to mean planning a huge wedding with hundreds of guests.

For many couples, the priority is simply becoming legally married. Whether you're planning a destination wedding later, organising a larger celebration in the future or just prefer to keep things simple, there are several ways to get married in Victoria.

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"What's the difference between getting married at the Registry Office and having a Marriage Celebrant?"

Here's what you need to know.

Can We Just Sign the Marriage Papers?

This is probably the biggest misconception. In Australia, there isn't a process where you simply "sign the papers."

To be legally married, a marriage ceremony must take place. It can be incredibly short and simple, three minutes to be precise, but it must include the legal wording required under Australian law and be conducted by an authorised Marriage Celebrant or at the Registry Office. Even if you don't want personal vows, readings or a personalised ceremony, you'll still have a legal ceremony.

Is a Registry Office Cheaper?

It depends on what you're looking for.

A Registry Office provides a straightforward legal ceremony at a set location and time.

A celebrant, however, offers flexibility. You can be married at your home, in your garden, at your favourite winery, on your family farm, beside a river or almost anywhere that's meaningful to you. Many celebrants, including me, also offer a Simple Wedding package designed specifically for couples who want to keep things relaxed, brief, affordable and uncomplicated while still choosing their own location.

Can We Get Married at Home?

Absolutely. Some of the most beautiful ceremonies I've conducted have taken place in people's backyards, on family properties and in private gardens; I've conducted many ceremonies in my own back garden with my horses getting in on the action.

If having your closest family around you feels more meaningful than a formal venue, that's completely possible.

Do We Only Need Two Witnesses?

Yes. Australian law requires two witnesses who are both over 18 years of age. Beyond that, your guest list is entirely up to you.

Some couples invite just their witnesses, while others include immediate family or a small group of close friends.

Can We Celebrate Overseas Later?

Yes. Many couples choose to complete the legal side of their marriage in Australia before travelling overseas for a symbolic destination wedding or celebration. This can make overseas planning much simpler while ensuring all the legal requirements have already been completed.

Can We Get Legally Married Before Our Destination Wedding?

Definitely. This has become increasingly popular. I've even conducted legal ceremonies in the car park at Tullamarine airport just before boarding flights for their destination 'faux' wedding. Your legal marriage can take place in Australia with a simple ceremony, allowing your overseas celebration to focus entirely on enjoying the experience with family and friends without worrying about legal paperwork in another country.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There's no right or wrong answer. A Registry Office may suit couples who simply want a legal ceremony at a government venue.

A celebrant offers far more flexibility if you'd like to choose your own location, include a handful of personal touches or celebrate somewhere that's special to you. One of the best things about modern weddings is that there are no rules.

Over the years I've seen pets included in all sorts of wonderful ways.

Your furry family member could:

The Cutest Ring Bearer - With One Important Rule

One of the most common questions I get asked is:

"Can our dog be the ring bearer?"

My answer is always...

Absolutely!

But with one important suggestion.

Please don't attach your actual wedding rings to your pet's collar.

No matter how well trained your dog is, they're still a dog. All it takes is one unexpected squirrel, one excited zoomie around the garden or one enthusiastic greeting of a guest and suddenly your wedding rings are somewhere nobody expected!

Instead, use replica rings or simply have your pet walk proudly with a decorative ring pillow or small keepsake attached to their collar or harness.

Keep the real rings safely in the hands (or pockets!) of your nominated ring bearer until it's time for the exchange.

Trust me... it removes a lot of unnecessary stress while still giving you all the adorable photographs.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way

Including your pet is wonderful, but a little preparation will help everything run smoothly.

I always recommend having a trusted friend, family member or professional pet chaperone whose only job is to look after your furry friend.

That person can make sure they're watered, walked, settled before the ceremony and ready for their big moment.

They can also whisk them away afterwards if your pet has had enough excitement for one day.

Just like little children, pets don't always stick to the script... and honestly, that's often part of the fun!

I recently had the pleasure of marrying Sarah-Jane and Matt at this stunning venue, and from the moment guests began to arrive, there was a wonderful sense of excitement in the air. One of the things I love most about weddings at Brown Brothers is the incredible variety of photo locations, all within easy walking distance. My advice is to build just a little breathing room into your timeline after the ceremony. It gives you the chance to wander through the vineyards, beneath the magnificent oak trees and around the gardens without feeling rushed. Six Suggestions As To How To Get Down The Aisle

There is no hard and fast rule about the processional - make it your own

Traditionally a Bride would make that final walk as a single person on the arm of her father, however there is no hard and fast rule about who should walk with the Bride. Everyone’s circumstances are different so here are just a few suggestions to help you when trying to decide who it could be.

Mum and Dad both walk down the aisle with the Bride

Family form a Guard of Honour and they each hand the Bride a rose as she passes by, (as pictured above)each of these are gathered together to make up her bouquet - place the bouquet in a vase on the signing table and gather it together for the recessional

Bride walks with sibling/s - a popular choice if parents are not present on the day

Bride walks with both Dad & Step-Dad - a wonderful way to honour the part that both have played in the brides life

Bride and groom walk in together - a unique twist and only for those that are not 'superstitious'. This is often applied once the couples have had 'first-look' photo sessions with their phtographer

Bride walks in with Mum and / or Step-Mum - again a way to honour one or two amazing ladies

Choosing flowers requires a lot of thought and consideration for maximum effect

How do you select your flowers, not only will you be carrying them, have them for Grooms button hole, they will be in all your photos and possibly throughout the reception venue.

Well chosen flowers bouquets and buttonholes enhance the atmosphere, colour and fragrance of the occasion and creates a beautiful and elegant environment.

So where do you begin? A few things to consider are colour, season, venue space and how they will complement your ‘theme’.

Let’s look at venue first; think about the space and what flowers would work best be they large assortments or small and delicate. Indoor or outdoor. Window lighting, colour of the walls or carpet can all have an impact on the flowers. I suggest you take a photo of your ceremony and venue location to show your florist. This will help them to guide you with your choices.

Season plays a big role in choices and cost. At a price your florist can ship in non-seasonal flowers however choosing in-season flowers will certainly help reduce the cost and there will be more choices.

Choosing a colour is possibly the easiest step of choosing flowers as you are probably already working to a theme. Will your theme be romantic, rustic, modern, traditional; the choices are endless as you’re your flower choices. Pops of colour will add to the theatre and to your photo portfolio so be careful not to clash with the bridal party colours.

In this photo the bridal couple chose a native theme, relying on the surroundings to provide a delightful backdrop. Their choice to place bunches of native flowers in hessian covered buckets, tied with lace and strategically placed on logs made a fabulous ‘arbour’.

Your Arrival Could Be A Showstopper

Brides are often looking for something with a bit of an edge to make their wedding be a bit of a stand out, have a bit of an edge and being that there are so many choices in locations to have a wedding ceremony, the arrival choices are endless. Here are some of the more left of field ways that my brides/couples have arrived at their ceremony.

Horseback - this is most little girls dreams and when it becomes a reality the photo opportunities and gasps from guests is so rewarding. Unless you are familiar with the unpredictable behaviour of horses when they are put in to unusual situations like excited guests, then refer to a reputable horse handler for these situations. Saddle and Bride are worth a call, Olof, pictured above is a gentle giant.

Boat - one of my brides came across a lake on her father's tinnie; the guests were totally caught off guard and the flowing veil caught up in the breeze made for fabulous photos. The only thing that caught the couple off-guard was they hadn’t actually thought through how the bride was going to disembark from the boat. So there was only one thing to do, the groom carried his bride-to-be in fireman's lift. More amazing photo opportunities.

Sea plane - yes how unique and such a treat for your guests. There is a downside of course and that is how to get from the plane to the beach.

Semi-trailer - this was a fun wedding arrival and the truck had a dual purpose; once the bride had elegantly climbed down out the cab with her dignity in tact, the tray truck then became the 'stage' for the receptions entertainment - a bush band.

Motorbike - this is a particular favourite for those who have a soft spot for leathers. A wedding I did recently had the groomsmen arriving at the ceremony with their bridal partners on the back. Certainly was a grand entrance but if you’re considering such an arrival, consider what your hair will be doing once you’ve taken off the helmet!

There are some aspects of the day that you just shouldn't 'wing-it'

Here is a list of things that should be non-negotiable's on your TO-DO list. It goes without saying that you will get a hair, make-up and tanning trial to say nothing of how many times you will ‘swoosh’ your wedding dress.

Camera Shy Spend some time with your photographer, even consider doing an engagement photo shoot so you know how your photographer communicates.

First Dance I would encourage you both to take a few formal dance lessons, particularly if wither of you have "two left feet".

Vows and Speeches This is a given, don’t wing it because you may forget some very important people in the moment when all the attention is on you. Practice it loud a few times and in to a mirror is a good way of getting familiar with the words.

Rehearsal This is a given. You may think a rehearsal is unnecessary – you’ve been to so many weddings, you know the routine. Maybe not. Chances are you haven’t actually done that walk as a bride, with all eyes on you. You could be the coolest of brides but as soon as you hit the top of the aisle and you capture a sea of faces with all eyes on you, there is undoubtedly a rush of adrenaline and the nerves kick in. All thoughts of what to do go out the window, even just putting one foot in front of the other has challenged a few brides at this point.

Wedding Shoes Always practice wearing and walking in your wedding shoes. Take them to your rehearsal as this is where you will have to learn to manoeuvre over uneven terrain, perhaps down steps or along the chapel aisle. Consider having two pairs, one for the ceremony and photos and one that you know you can dance the night away on the dance floor and won’t give you blisters that will ruin your honeymoon.

Ending Conversations Gracefully As you greet your guests, you'll find that everyone will want to hold a conversation with you, and if you let them go on too long it will take your night away. Practice sentences that warmly express your gratitude for your guests being there on your special day and then a polite closure that helps you move on to the next table. Something like, 'We are so happy you could be here! Please, enjoy your dinner and the bar is over there when you're ready for a refill or hope to see you on the dance floor. This makes you a gracious host and guests are happy that you have acknowledged their presence.

They're Not Just Guests - They're Part of Your Story

One of the questions I'm asked most often as a marriage celebrant is:

"How can we include our children in the ceremony?"

My answer is always the same...

Keep it simple.

Whether your children are toddlers, teenagers or somewhere in between, including them in your wedding can create some of the most heartfelt moments of the day. But the key is to choose something that suits their personality, not the expectations of everyone else.

Remember, while you're focused on marrying the love of your life, your little people are experiencing a day that's exciting, emotional and often completely overwhelming.

There are new faces everywhere, beautiful clothes they aren't used to wearing, lots of waiting around and plenty of curious eyes watching them.

Even the most confident child can decide at the last minute that they'd rather cling to Mum's leg than walk down the aisle... and that's perfectly okay.

Little Children Don't Read the Run Sheet

I've conducted enough weddings to know one thing for certain...

Children are wonderfully unpredictable.

And honestly, that's part of their charm.

If your three-year-old decides halfway down the aisle that they'd rather wave to Grandma, stop to pick up a leaf or run back for a cuddle, don't panic.

Those unscripted moments often become everyone's favourite memory.

Your guests won't be judging.

They'll be smiling.

Wedding Roles Children Love

If your children would like to be involved, there are so many lovely ways to include them.

They could be:

Flower girls or page boys.
Ring bearers.
Bubble blowers.
Petal throwers.
Sign carriers with a fun or heartfelt message.
Helpers during a unity ceremony.
Walking down the aisle with Mum, Dad or another family member.
Standing with you throughout the ceremony.

My Biggest Ring Bearer Tip

If there's one piece of advice I give every couple...

Don't give children the real wedding rings.

Yes, they look adorable carrying them.

No, it's not worth the risk!

Instead, attach replica rings to the cushion or ring box for the photographs, and keep the real rings safely with your best man, maid of honour or another trusted adult until it's time for the exchange.

I've never met a four-year-old who intentionally wanted to lose a wedding ring...

...but I have met plenty who were suddenly distracted by butterflies, puppies or something far more exciting than jewellery!

What About Teenagers?

Teenagers often appreciate being given a meaningful role that reflects their age.

They might:

Escort a parent down the aisle.
Read a favourite poem or reading.
Witness the signing of the marriage certificates.
Help welcome guests.
Play live music if they're talented musicians.
Simply stand proudly beside you during the ceremony.

Giving older children an important role can be a wonderful way of recognising the place they already hold within your family.

Blending Two Families

Some of the most moving ceremonies I've conducted have involved children from previous relationships.

A wedding isn't just bringing two people together.

Sometimes it's the beginning of a brand-new family.

Whether it's including the children in your entrance, acknowledging them during the ceremony or sharing a family hug after your vows, these thoughtful moments can become some of the most emotional memories of the day.

The Best Weddings Leave Room for Real Life

One of the reasons I love celebrating family-focused weddings is because they feel real.

They aren't about perfection.

They're about love.

They're about laughter.

They're about creating memories that genuinely reflect your family.

Why not include them in your celebrations

It is important to be surrounded by the people you love on your wedding day. For many couples, their nearest and dearest include a four-legged friend, but the question often is not whether or not you want your pet in the wedding, but rather how can you include your pet.

Before you decide what your pet will do, you should ask officials at the venues where your wedding and reception will be held if they allow pets on the premises. Some will have no restrictions in place, while others may.

One of the favourite ways is to incorporate your fur baby into the ceremony. Your pet can act as the ring bearer or escort the flower girl down the aisle, or even take a prominent place as your ‘best’ per right at the alter.

Whatever the role you choose for your pet, keep in mind that they will need a handler other than you who can care for them and get them down the aisle if need be.

If goes without saying that including your pets in your wedding does take some planning.

Its usually best to have your pet present in just one part of the day, say during your ceremony or for photos, and then arrange to have him or her taken home before the reception. And though it may seem like an unnecessary task to add to your to-do list, it will be worth the wonderful photo opportunity.

If you really love your best friend, don’t overlook having them in your wedding ceremony.

Country Weddings Allow More Freedom In The Wedding Brief

Just loved being part of this country wedding where the guests could party til sunrise with no fear of being asked to leave at midnight. Why? Because it was held at the groom's family property.

Food trucks rolled in and were adjacent to the large marquee where the band played through the night. The fire pit raged and conversations were engaging.

The ceremony was beautifully serenaded by locals Tim and Lisa Duo.

Drinks were flowing from a fully reno'd caravan aptly named The Rambler. The groom was responsible for this complete make-over and this event was her first outing, and guaranteed not to be her last - it was a huge success.

Wedding Arbour Inspiration for an Outdoor Ceremony

One of the things I love most about outdoor weddings is seeing couples create something completely unique, and this stunning horizontal arbour did exactly that.

Rather than reaching for the sky, it framed the ceremony beautifully, drawing your eye across the vibrant flowers before naturally lifting to the towering gum trees behind. It worked perfectly with the landscape, complementing the Australian bush instead of competing with it.

This wedding was also a beautiful celebration of two cultures. The floral design embraced the rich, warm colours inspired by traditional Indian spices, creating a ceremony space that was full of personality, colour and meaning. Every detail came together to create an unforgettable backdrop for saying "I do."

Some wedding trends come and go, but every now and then you see a styling choice that feels effortlessly timeless.

This wedding was one of those.

The bride had a clear vision from the very beginning. Every member of the bridal party, both the bridesmaids and the groomsmen, wore black. It was bold, elegant and incredibly sophisticated.

Against that dramatic backdrop, the bride carried a bouquet of classic white roses, while her bridesmaids carried matching blooms. The contrast of crisp white flowers against black attire was simply stunning. Every photograph had a beautiful sense of balance, and as the bride stepped into view, she naturally became the centre of attention. Modern tech ensures no-one misses out

One thing Covid has taught us, nothing is off limits. When guests can't attend an event, modern technology steps in.
In this instance one of the bridesmaids had taken ill and was in hospital at the time of the ceremony so Grandma brought her ipad and live streamed the whole event so the bridesmaid and sister didn't miss out.
Not all that long ago this would have been frowned upon but not in the current climate, in fact it is quite acceptable.

Keeping Memories Alive In A Wedding

It goes without saying that a wedding ceremony can be highly emotional however, this emotion can be taken to a whole different level when someone very special is missing from your special day.

There are many different ways to honour that person or persons, it is an entirely personal choice.

My own daughter-in-law carried miniature framed photos (pictured here) of grandparents - both hers and her grooms, attached to her bouquet.

Other suggestions can be subtle or more stated such as;

Stage a memorial table which could include large framed photos.
A vacant chair with a familiar item, words not required.
A candle lit by the bride and groom and allowed to burn throughout the ceremony.
A family heirloom such as Grandpas's handkerchief could be the pocket square for the groom
Or a special necklace or bracelet worn by the bride.

There are no rules or restrictions about how to honour a loved one so the options are limited only by your imagination!

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed...

No matter how modern you are, we all like to hold on to a hint of tradition

Something old represents continuity of tradition from the past; something new offers optimism for the new life ahead; something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity.

Ever wonder what this small yet much loved and adopted rhythmic superstition meant? While no bride should ever feel the need to be superstitious on her big day, these bridal superstitions where there to add a little extra karma to the special day. The poem is an Old English rhyme whose exact origins are not exactly known but was often recited during the Victorian era. There’s printed evidence in the 1894 edition of the Pennsylvania newspaper, The Warren Ledger.

It's a longstanding wedding tradition that brides wear something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue on their wedding day for good luck. Aside from the traditional approach of a blue garter, borrowed handkerchief, old jewellery, and a new wedding dress, below are a few suggestions to modernise the tradition.

Something Old – for some creativity, add vintage jewellery to your bouquet; a small photo charm of family members that can’t attend ie. grandparents and attach that to your bouquet;

Something New – if you’re taking his name then your new initials embroidered in to your wedding dress; carry a coin minted in the year of your wedding

Something Borrowed - Use your dads wedding tie and wrap it around your wedding bouquet; accessories are a great thing to borrow if you can, it will make the lender feel that bit closer to you on your big day.

Something Blue - Let your fingers do the good luck talking with a pale turquoise nail polish shade; cute shoes are a sassy and fun way of incorporating this lucky colour.

To Rehearse Or Not To Rehearse

Would you wear your wedding dress without trying it on first?

The rehearsal is often the first time the whole wedding party gets together before the wedding ceremony and perhaps the first time some of the bridal party may have met each other.

Often my couples will request not to have a rehearsal as they have so much on their To Do list that fitting in a rehearsal can be quite the chore. So the big question - is a wedding rehearsal really necessary?

In my experience, I believe it is. Although you may have attended many weddings and have observed how it’s done, you haven’t actually walked that walk. Many brides are as cool as a cucumber until they hit the top of the ‘aisle’, then the adrenaline and nerves kick in and without a rehearsal they may get a little lost and not enjoy every moment as much as they should.

Forty-five minutes, on location, should be ample time to cover off such things as the logistics of your ceremony with the majority of the wedding party. It is important for any little people involved in the ceremony so that they know where to walk and who to walk to, a great chance for them to become familiar with your celebrant; choreograph where to stand; how to move into and out of the ceremony area; who will have the rings and how will they be handed over at that moment of the ceremony; where do the parents sit so they have the best view of their son or daughter’s face throughout the ceremony; where the signing table will be located; where will the guests reader stand. Also this is the ideal opportunity to complete the last of the legal documents before the ceremony.

A rehearsal held around the same time as the actual ceremony gives the opportunity to check where the sun will be at that time of day so as not to be shining into either the wedding party’s or guests eyes.

Those of my couples that pushed back on a rehearsal, always thanked me for guiding them in the direction of a rehearsal because it did help them to know what to expect, assisted in reducing their nerves and in turn contributed to a relaxed, seamless and spectacular ceremony - just as they had planned.

Real Wedding - Tips On How To Include Mother Of The Groom

Your new mother-in-law (to be) will feature greatly in your lives, so now would be a good time to include her on this significant day

All too often the mother of the groom doesn’t have a role to play in the ceremony and yet she has played a big part in the upbringing of the groom. I was unexpectedly included in the ceremony when the celebrant chosen by my son and daughter-in-law to be suddenly took ill just as the ceremony began. I stepped in and carried on to complete the ceremony. Of course this is a highly unusual and not a way I ever envisaged that I would be included in my sons ceremony. For a less dramatic inclusion, here are a few ways to include the Mother-of-the-Groom.

A reading : providing MoG is confident to be able to step up and engage in public speaking, this would be an appropriate way to include her

Stand by the groom whilst he waits for his bride to arrive ; this is a particularly special touch

Signing of the register ; there is no hard and fast rule (other than the witnesses must be over the age of 18) as to whom signs the register, so to have both mums witness this significant part of the ceremony is a special role for the day and it’s on paper.

Presenter of the rings ; allowing MoG to be the ring bearer can address a fear of public speaking

Walking down the aisle with the Groom - why not have parents escort the Groom to the Celebrant just prior to the Bride arriving
